The Brenne, land of a thousand ponds
South-west of Châteauroux, the Brenne regional nature park holds more than 2,000 ponds. Herons, pond turtles, black storks and dragonflies inhabit this wetland territory unique in France. A viewpoint at the Mer Rouge pond, an ornithological observation path in Rosnay or a supervised swim at Bellebouche make up nature dates, where a good silence is sometimes worth more than a long speech.
Nohant, in George Sand’s footsteps
An hour’s drive north-east, Nohant hosts George Sand’s house, preserved as she left it. You can picture Chopin at the piano and the writer’s great literary dinners. The small village, its private theatre and its church form a perfectly romantic setting for a cultural date. The surrounding fields then call for a digestive walk through the landscapes of deep Berry.
Villages and pond banks
The Brenne also keeps lovely villages like Mézières-en-Brenne and farm inns serving carp, frogs and local dishes. A lunch there, then a walk around a pond, and the day feels like a small novel. On Lyad, members from the Indre share their secret corners; it is up to you to find someone to go and listen to the frogs at sunset with.
